The Siberian ground squirrel (or chipmunk) is considerably smaller than the red squirrel and has a sand-colored coat with five dark stripes. Ground squirrels that have escaped from captivity are found in various places around Europe, as well as in the Netherlands.
The squirrels build up a food supply in the winter. They collect different nuts and seeds in their cheek pouches and bury their supply in the ground. A winter stock can contain up to 2 kg of seeds!
