The Old World swallowtail is the largest butterfly you can find in the Netherlands. In 2013, this species was voted the most beautiful butterfly in the Netherlands and the royal title fits well with its graceful wings and wing beat. The wings of the swallowtail have a relatively large wingspan of up to 75 millimeters and show a striking, contrasting pattern. This butterfly is also known as the swallowtail. The name swallowtail is derived from the black tails on the hind wings. This butterfly species has been a positive exception to the sharp decline in butterflies in recent years. Luckily nowadays we can expect them annually in gardens filled with butterfly bush, Phlox or other nectar plants. Previously you had to be in the south of the Netherlands to spot them. However, these butterflies can now be seen in every part of the Netherlands.
