With its jaunty tail, the wren is a striking bird in the Netherlands. Because the wren is so common, there are many regional pet names. The Frisian name is ‘tomke’, which means ‘little thumb’ in Dutch. In North and South Holland the bird is called ‘little jantje’. With their pointy beak they are specialised in eating small insects, for example: caterpillars, spiders, larvae and seeds.
The size of this bird may be small, but in terms of volume they are very loud. The songs are a long, jumbled bubbling introduced by abrupt churrs and scolds and made up of 12-16 recognizable syllables. House Wrens make a variety of harsh sounds: churrs, chatters, rattles, and scolds, often in response to large animals that might be predators.
